Customer intimacy
What does Customer intimacy mean?
Customer intimacy is a business strategy built around understanding a particular customer's needs and tailoring products, service, or support to fit them.
It is more specific than being friendly or sending personalized emails. The practical question is whether what you learn about customers changes how you serve them. Treacy and Wiersema describe customer intimacy as one of three value disciplines, alongside operational excellence and product leadership.
Illustrative workplace example
A software supplier learns that a customer's main problem is onboarding new staff, then adapts its training and support plan around that workflow instead of offering the same package to every account.
How it differs from related ideas
Customer satisfaction describes how customers feel about an experience. Customer intimacy describes a strategic approach to understanding and serving them; a satisfaction survey alone does not establish it.
Say it in plain English
Understand our customers and tailor our service to their needs.
Original dictionary entry
A business strategy focused on building deep, personal relationships with customers to understand their needs.
